Scout stuff

Posted by JiggyDino - May 31st, 2019

I guess I got un-scouted at some point? Just learned cause I just got re-scouted (thank you!).

Kinda weird that NG don't really tell you about it. And There don't seem to be a scout history to tell me anything about it either. So now I dunno if someone down the branch messed up, if my previous scout got sick of me posting only animated pixel animation instead of regular art too, or if someone I scouted messed up. I vaguely assume I did nothing wrong because surely NG would bother telling me if I did so then?!?!? I guess too bad for anyone I scouted, says NG.

This whole scouting system seems flawed from the get go. Was never super into it even years ago when they created the art portal. But it's worse with no feedback.

At any rate, hope you guys continues to enjoy what I make.

Hmm. They must be trying to do updates with scouting because you're like the fourth artists I've seen say something about it. I will still reiterate the common guide about scouting though: https://ornery.newgrounds.com/news/post/388624

I respectfully disagree with the statement that the scouting system is flawed for the same reasons made in that post. It doesn't need feedback about it because it's not that big a deal. The only reason for the scouting system is to keep garbage out of the portal. The good (or at least things people like) will always put itself on the forefront and it's not like your art is getting deleted or you're losing follows because of it. It's honestly unhealthy how people worry about it too. Just like the front page, don't let numbers, attention, and placement be the blah blah blah.

As of late, I'm leaning towards thinking the scouting system is going through a 'sorting reset.' Like it's re-calibrating a list scoutees/scouters to compile them into a new list with a new system that works better/more efficiently. Contextual thinking though. Tom hinted at updates to the scouting system, so I'm keeping an eye out for what they do. It's not like any site is without problems. And it's not like they aren't trying to improve things either. Have a good one.

I guess it could make sense that they are tinkering behind the scene.

I wasn't a fan of the scouting system when I read that thing you linked to when the art portal was new and wasn't a fan of it last year when I decided to revive this account and re-read those rules.

I understand the idea of trying to keep newbie art off the art portal, but it's the execution that I find bad. It's good if NG's community are good at keeping an eye on unscouted art and makes sure good art is found (most of the internet has plenty of great content maker that gets ignored, so it might be why I find it hard to believe someone would bother looking through unscouted art) but I guess I find that to be dicey. I can't see how many people truly gives a shot to the unscouted art if most people here would rather see a list of nice scouted art since that would be the point. Which is why I think punishing an entire branch is kind of a weird way to handle that.

Plus it don't help that the bluntness of the rules reeks of teenage tier smugness. They even have a part of the rule addressing how they believe the system is not flawed. Points for transparency I guess.

Ultimately, I don't know how long I was unscouted, which is where my main current concern comes from. If I was uncouted for a week, then I can see that people probably keeps a good eye on the uncouted art page. But for all I know (based on when I noticed I got less new followers) It could have been over a month+. But I'm glad I don't use NG as my main art spot because of how I can just randomly lose scout and have to cross my fingers that someone will spot my art in the unscouted section. Tom keeps wishing artists will use NG more, but it's hard to want to do so with a guillotine (I know, exaggeration) hanging over our head all the time. It's easier to ignore numbers when you have enough of them to not worry about.

But it probably don't help that most artists, including myself, have self doubt and other mental issues. So when smug assholes tell artists to just stop making shitty art, it's not like I ever thought my art was amazing. I'm surprised I got scouted at least twice. Is my animation even good enough? On this site full of expert animators that have curated animations for years? Hard for me to think I matter. And I'm sure the people that voted 0 on my art believes that I don't deserve the scout. That's why the bar seems fuzzy as hell. None of it feels objective cause it can't be. But people that call art shitty believes their opinion is law I guess.

The constant updates is what keeps me around. Some of it were already impressive to me and it makes me hopeful about what could come in the future. Hearing they might be updating the scouting system sounds good and practically tells me they might finally see the flaws it has. Or not since I don't know what they'll change. But having a bunch of new artists come in and remind NG it's 2019 seems to have helped. The scouting rules is written in a really outdated manner for one...

But I dunno. I'm mostly using NG right now as I'm scouting the site as a spot to post art, and say what you will about the crappy art on other sites, I still feel like NG has a long way to make itself the ideal place for artists. Some parts are cool, but some others undermines itself severely.
